Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that replaces parabens in many cosmetics. It has low irritancy at the permitted level of 1 %.
What it is
It appears in creams, lotions, baby wipes, shampoos and make-up. The label shows phenoxyethanol.
How IngrediScan rates it
These levels come from the fixed rules in the IngrediScan app. A low level means the rules found little or no concern for that profile. It does not mean the ingredient is safe for everyone.
| Profile | Skin (cosmetics) |
|---|---|
| Adult | Low |
| Child | Low |
| Infant | Low |
| Dog | No concern found |
| Cat | No concern found |
The app notes possible irritation of sensitive skin. The note applies to the permitted use level.
Basis of the ratings: limited or mixed data, errs on safety.
Possible concerns: Irritant.
The app's rationale (exact text)
- Adult (skin), Child (skin), Infant (skin): Low-irritancy preservative at cosmetic use levels.
Rules and use
In cosmetics the EU limits phenoxyethanol to 1 % (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, Annex V).
