Methylparaben
Methylparaben is a preservative that keeps cosmetics from spoiling. EU law limits the amount in a product. Scientists still watch for weak hormone-like effects.
What it is
It appears in creams, lotions, shampoos and make-up. On labels it appears as methylparaben or methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate.
How IngrediScan rates it
These levels come from the fixed rules in the IngrediScan app. A low level means the rules found little or no concern for that profile. It does not mean the ingredient is safe for everyone.
| Profile | Food | Skin (cosmetics) |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | Medium | Low |
| Child | Medium | Low |
| Infant | Medium | Low |
| Dog | No concern found | No concern found |
| Cat | No concern found | No concern found |
The EU safety committee (SCCS) found methyl and ethyl parabens not of concern at the permitted levels, and their oestrogen-like effect is far weaker than that of oestradiol. The app notes little concern for skin use but keeps a cautious note, because the evidence on hormone effects is not fully settled.
Basis of the ratings: limited or mixed data, errs on safety.
Possible concerns: Endocrine-disrupting.
The app's rationale (exact text)
- Adult (food), Child (food), Infant (food): SCCS opinions note endocrine-activity signals with hedged evidence; precautionary Medium for human food presence.
- Adult (skin), Child (skin), Infant (skin): Methyl and ethyl parabens: SCCS not of concern with weak estrogenicity far below estradiol; hedged Low.
Rules and use
In cosmetics the EU allows up to 0.4 % of one paraben ester and up to 0.8 % of a mixture of esters (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, Annex V).
